CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Abstracts are being sought for oral presentations and posters covering a wide range of projects and research topics. All interested parties – including students, faculty, professionals, conservancies, environmental agencies, and law and policy makers – are invited to contribute.
Your presentation does NOT have to be geographically restricted to the Susquehanna watershed or the Chesapeake Bay region. We are interested in learning about watersheds around the world! The symposium offers you a terrific opportunity to make others aware of your research or the environmental restoration and conservation projects you have underway.

Awards will be given for best undergraduate and graduate poster and oral presentations.
Bucknell is preparing to host this year’s symposium as an in-person event so that all individuals onsite — attendees, speakers, staff, vendors, and venue personnel — remain safe and comfortable. Creating a safe, worry-free symposium experience is our top priority. We are monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and following the guidance of our partners at Geisinger Medical Center, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Center for Disease Control. Should conditions change, we are prepared to offer the symposium entirely online (virtual) like we did last year.
TOPICS
We seek abstracts for poster and oral presentations covering a broad range of watershed science and engineering topics, including:
– floods; droughts; hydroclimatology of extreme events;
– impact of climate change on watershed systems
– headwater regions, small stream habitats, tributary-mainstem connections;
– spatial and temporal variability within and across watersheds;
– hydrogeology, karst, and groundwater resources and remediation
– terrestrial ecosystems in forests, meadows, and the riparian corridor
– urban hydrology and new approaches to stormwater management
– fluvial geomorphology and processes; stream restoration and river engineering
– renewable energy; sustainability; oil and natural gas development;
– spatial and temporal variability within and across watersheds
– river-bay-estuary-ocean connections; deltaic and brackish environments;
– indigenous wisdom and interconnectedness of communities (human and non-human)
– connections between river health and human health
– revitalizing river towns – the intersection between recreation, economic growth, and other factors;
– watershed planning and sustainability;
– communicating science to the public; community awareness and education;
– ecosystem services and assessing the economic value of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems;
– improving diversity and inclusion of students and professionals in the disciplines of environmental sciences and engineering
What Are the Steps Involved in Presenting?
Posters
A. SUBMITTING YOUR POSTER ABSTRACT
First, you use the online form to submit your abstract by 11:59 pm October 16th, 2022. Be sure to specify your preference as “poster”. Within a few days, you’ll receive an email confirming your abstract has been received. As you are preparing your poster, we will organize all the poster submissions into topical groups.
B. SUBMITTING YOUR POSTER MATERIALS
After October 18th, you will be emailed a link to an online form you can use to upload your poster presentation materials:
1. PDF copy of your poster (required)
2. Microsoft WORD (*.doc) file containing their poster title, list of authors, and abstract. (required)
3. Video file (*.mp4 format) describing your poster and identifies 3-4 key “take-away” points they want the audience to leave with. This video is optional. Most people use Zoom to record a short video of themselves explaining their poster and elaborating on their work. This video should be short and succinct and no longer than 4 minutes long.
Once you recieve your acceptance email you can upload these presentation materials as soon as the submission form becomes available. The deadline for uploading your poster materials is 12pm (noon), Thursday, November 3rd, 2022.
*IF WE GO VIRTUAL:
How will people find your poster and be able to interact with you?
– The symposium web site will have a page that contains all the posters with links to your poster, abstract, and optional short video. That web page will become live on or before Friday, Nov. 4th between 9 am and 12 pm. Attendees can look at the posters throughout the day and make note of Zoom sessions they want to attend so they can interact with the authors and join the discussions about their work.
On or before Wednesday, November 2nd, you will receive an email confirming the session your poster is in and when you should be present in that Zoom session to entertain questions from the audience.
Oral Presentations
A. SUBMITTING YOUR ORAL PRESENTATION ABSTRACT FOR APPROVAL
First, you use the online form to submit your abstract by October 16th. Be sure to specify your preference as “oral presentation”. Within a few days, you’ll receive an email confirming your abstract has been accepted. As you are preparing your oral presentation, we will organize all the oral submissions into hour-long topical sessions of three, 20-minute talks. We will notify you of your time slot on or before November 3rd, 2022.
B. SUBMITTING YOUR ORAL PRESENTATION MATERIALS
The week prior to the symposium, speakers will be emailed a link to a Google form specifically designed for them to upload their oral presentation materials:
1. PDF or POWERPOINT copy of your presentation slides (required)
2. Microsoft WORD (*.doc) file containing your oral presentation title, list of authors, and abstract. (required)
3. ONLY IF WE ARE VIRTUAL – Video file (*.mp4 format) of your oral presentation. This video is required. Most people use Zoom to record a short video of themselves explaining their poster and elaborating on their work. This video should be short and succinct and no longer than 4 minutes long.
*IF WE GO VIRTUAL:
You will also be required to submit a video file (*.mp4 format) of your oral presentation.
Note: Due to bandwidth and other technical constraints, live presentations using the “share screen” option of Zoom will not be permitted for oral presentations. Instead, speakers need to record their presentation and upload it to the symposium website server by November 3, 2022.
The deadline for uploading your oral presentation materials is 12 pm (noon), Thursday, November 3rd, 2022. We need this time to organize all the oral presentations and post links to them on the symposium website.
Making a video of your presentation is relatively straightforward using Zoom or PowerPoint. If you have never done this, you can find a number of helpful tutorials online.
By 9am Saturday, November 5th, links to your oral presentation abstract will be posted on the “Oral Presentations” page of the symposium website. Attendees can learn more about your work ahead of time and make a note of when your presentation will be held and the Zoom link to join the session.
The exact time slot when you will be presenting will be emailed several days before the symposium and/or posted on the symposium website. Oral presentations will likely be grouped into hour-long sessions that consist of four 15-minute presentations (10-12 minute video + 3-5 minutes for questions from participants in the Zoom call). The Session Moderator will introduce each speaker, play their 10-12 minute presentation video, and then allow 3-5 minutes for questions from the audience. Speakers should log into the Zoom session 10 minutes before it begins and remain for the entire session.
